Expert Appraiser’s Comments:
Patek Philippe’s legendary 5970 perpetual calendar chronograph looks the part in 18-karat white gold. The famed reference lived a short but glorious life as Patek Philippe watch buyers and watch collectors scrambled to secure 5970s of all metal and dial combinations during the watch’s 2004-2010 production run. With less than 3,000 examples of all descriptions having been built by Patek Philippe, this generation of perpetual calendar chronograph became an instant investment watch. Each Patek 5970 is 40mm in diameter and houses a Lemania 2310-based manual wind caliber CH27-70 PS Q. The caliber is finished in the finest tradition of Geneva watchmaking and bears the now discontinued-at-Patek Geneva Hallmark. A 48-hour power reserve is metered through a free-sprung Gyromax balance beating at 18,000 vibrations per hour (VpH). The Breguet overcoil hairspring helps this complicated watch to keep chronometer grade time. A traditional chronograph lateral clutch is controlled through a column wheel function selector for crisp pusher action, and the manual wind architecture ensures that no bridges or rotors obscure the owner’s view through a sapphire display caseback. The 30-meter water resistance affords protection against splashes and unexpected rain showers.
