Fusée-and-Chain Transmission
The most fascinating feature is arguably the fusée-and-chain mechanism.
A traditional mechanical movement can experience variations in torque as the mainspring unwinds. The fusée-and-chain system is designed to help regulate the force delivered from the mainspring to the gear train.
The chain connects the barrel to the cone-shaped fusée. As the mainspring unwinds, the changing leverage of the fusée helps compensate for variations in available torque.
For Zenith, this was particularly significant because the Academy Georges Favre-Jacot became the manufacture’s first wristwatch combining a tourbillon with a fusée-and-chain transmission.
